It’s officially time to flex! Reward are super excited to share the good news (don’t worry, it’s not the gender reveal party sort of news) – we’ve only gone and become B Corp certified! This means a huge deal to us, it’s an official pat on the back for all the work we do to be ethical and sustainable. But what exactly does it mean? Certified B Corporations (B Corps) like us are for-profit companies that work to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. After going through a thorough assessment, we’ve proved that we meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. Not to humble brag or anything.

What is a B Corp?

As of March 2021, there are almost 4,000 B Corps in 150 industries and 74 countries around the world. But what exactly is a B Corporation, I hear you cry? Well, put simply B Corps are companies that balance profit with purpose. Or to be more exact, they’re the organisations that understand the importance of ethos, that build a more inclusive and sustainable economy. B Corps use profit and growth as a means to achieve a greater end: positive impact for their employees, communities, and the environment. 💅

B Corps get that our biggest problems (such as impending environmental doom and worker exploitation) can’t be solved by governments and nonprofits alone. Instead, we rely on our own efforts to work towards reducing inequality, poverty, creating a healthier environment, stronger communities, and more high quality jobs. We’re in great company – some other B Corporations that are killing it include Allbirds, bio-bean, and our forever brand crush – Patagonia.

Why We Became One

Mitchel, our Managing Director, founder and the agency’s all-round father-hen is the man behind the certification. Mitchel always believed that the B Corps set the gold standard for good business. Using the B Corp assessment to review the good we have already done, along with the areas in which we can improve, he began the process back in July 2020. Nearly a year on, and after a rigorous evaluation, we can finally say that Reward is the marketing agency with the highest B Corp assessment score ever – a whopping 111.5

But let’s break that score down, shall we?

How We Became B Corp Certified

To certify as a B Corp, a company must achieve a minimum verified score of 80 points on the B Impact Assessment (again, we got 111.5!) – as verified by the non-profit B Lab. The assessment process included questions about the ways Reward helps to create a positive impact for our team, community, and environment. We even gained extra points as our overall business model helps to create positive social and planetary impact on a wider scale – by now you probably know that we only work with sustainable brands.

To be technical, the B Corp assessment measures a company’s performance in five categories: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment. It’s no coincidence that the assessment categories align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, gives us a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which represent a global call to action, and a framework for all ethical businesses. It’s pretty humbling that our Impact Assessment score was so high – it hammers home just how important valued our efforts to contribute to a sustainable, circular economy really are.

The final, most heavily weighted part of the assessment took into account our specific ‘Impact Business Model.’ To be fair, this is just a way of saying that our business model isn’t governed by profit alone, but by the desire to create a positive outcome for all the stakeholders in our supply chain. Of course, the assessment also took into account the charitable giving efforts and employee benefits of our agency.

All in all, B Corp Certification proves that we are meeting the required standards of ethical performance. It’s a stamp of approval that we’re honoured to share.
